Symposium of the Burda Akademie zum dritten Jahrtausend (academy of the third millennium) held as
part of Telepolis in Luxembourg The creation of virtual cities in cyberspace is being accompanied by considerable euphoria. What effects will this development have on real, material cities? Will the city as a place where the power, wealth, knowledge and creativity of our society is concentrated cease to exist if more and more functions traditionally performed by cities are performed instead through electronic networks? What new functions could the city assume to take their place? What form would communications and urban life take in the networked city? What demands does the city of the 21st century place on urban planners and architects? How can ecological and economic issues be better combined in future? The symposium "Telepolis - City in the Cyberspace Era" will attempt to provoke a long overdue dialogue between theorists and practicians on these and similar questions. Specialist lecturers have been invited from a broad sweep of disciplines including architecture, urban planning, sociological and economic urban research, brain research and the history of architecture. |
